Building an Innovation Capability

InnovationLabs Works with Bell Canada to Build an Internal Collaborative Capability

Our relationship with Bell Canada began in the fall of 2002 and continues to the present day. This relationship originated through and engagement with the WildWorks Group to build a collaborative Innovation capability within Bell's R&D group.

Early in the engagement we provided design consultation on the development and building of the Delta Centre Innovation Lab. Later in the engagement we provided support for the training and development of the Delta Centre team - building the capability to design and deliver in-house collaborative session in a custom designed environment. This team has been extremely successfull providing facilitated collaborative sessions for many divisions within the larger organization.

Initially focused on new product development and R&D efforts, these collaborative services quickly spread to other areas of the organization including:

  • strategy development
  • strategic alliances and partnership development
  • operational improvements
  • revenue generation
  • culture change

Today the Delta Centre is part of an internal collaborative services team providing services to the entire organization.

2010 Olympic Winter Games

Between January and April 2004 InnovationLabs worked closely with Norm Silins, Bell Canada's Telecom Solutions General Manager and project leader, to facilitate the planning process that ultimately produced the technology solution included in the $200 million winning bid for providing telecom services.

In a carefully-structured series of collaborative planning sessions with a cross-functional team representing 11 different technology groups, Bell designed a comprehensive and complete technology and telecommunications solution to deliver the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

To our knowledge this is the first time a single vendor will integrate all these different technologies in a single solution:

  • Voice and Data
  • Cable TV
  • Cellular (Wireless) and WiFi
  • Radio
  • Portal and Internet Services
  • Broadcast Video
  • Back office (data centers and help desk)

In addition to the collaborative sessions, the InnovationLabs team produced several large StoryMaps to show how the integration of these technologies would actually be accomplished. These StoryMaps were instrumental in both understanding the complexity of the challenge in integrating these technologies as well as communicating the ultimate solution.

InnovationLabs is proud to be a part of Bell Canada's Olympic Team!
