Designing a New IndustryInnovationLabs Has Been Working with NASA and the Aerospace Community to Design a Commercial Space IndustryChallenge: What if the continuing development of the International Space Station was supported by commercial and entrepreneurial endeavors? What if the research conducted on the space station was paid for, and provided benefit to, commercial enterprises? These and other questions drove the NASA Astrobiology and Space Reseaerch Directorate to used for commerciThe international space station has been supported by government programs Solution: Bring together a diverse group of forward thinkers from both NASA and Industry to develop economic and operational models that would shift the paradigm currently used by most people when they think of Space, Space Exploration, and the Space Station. Story: Through our relationship with the California Space Grant Foundation we began working with NASA Ames in 2005. In our first project with them we were asked to design and facilitate a collaborative workshop for the NASA Ames Astrobiology and Space Research Directorate. This session was focused on exploring the viability of a new entrepreneurial paradigm for the International Space Station. This first workshop inspired several follow-on workshops sponsored in part by the Alliance for Commercial Enterprises in Space (ACES) to expand the models developed in the first workshop to help develop a commercial space industry. These workshops have the intension of shifting the paradigm of the entire space industry and build on the momentum that is being seen developing throughout the private aerospace industry. The first of these workshops took place in October 2005 and focused on commercial opportunities in space. The second, entitled, Sim-Space took place in March 2006. This workshop focused on developing virtual reality space simulation for education and entertainment.
In May 2006 we designed and facilitated the Commercial Space Forum sponsored by the NASA Space Partnership Development Research Partnership Centers and hosted by NASA Ames. This workshop featured representatives from NASA, the Research Partnership Centers, the space industry, and the investment community gathered together to explore the future of space commercialization.
