Interesting aspects of 2020
I'd like to have a brief conversation with you first about life in 2020. What were the most interesting aspects about that?
- More multi-cultural
- Less face to face communication but more need for it
- Seamless integration
- Continuous learning and education
- More collaboration
- Inclusion will be more prevalent
- Privacy concerns
Before we assumed there was a thing called privacy. This concept is now being challenged. We are looking at what can be shared and when. How many people have a Facebook account? (half the hands in the room) How many of you have changed your privacy settings? (most of the previously raised hands) That’s great. The majority of people have not changed their settings either because they’re lazy or they don’t understand the consequences of not changing them.
How many of you have googled yourself? (about 75%)
Other comments?
- It’s important to discern the difference between information and misinformation
- We’ll be faced with more ethical decisions
- The consumer will demand more from everyone, more accountability
- The baseline to be in the game is raised for quality, service, information
- There’s more demand for customization and personalization
About 5 years ago there was a bicycle shop in Japan that figured out how to customize for each customer. What was their problem?
- Too many customers
- Couldn’t produce bicycles fast enough
Exactly the opposite. They produced them so fast that the customers didn’t quite trust them. But that was 5 years ago.
Other comments?
- We’re all immigrants and we are not going to be so America-focused
- The ideologies will become more separated. We will become more stratified in our beliefs.
- It is very important to be exposed to other points of view.
- People will purposefully unplug. What will balance look like?
- Trust has changed. Following Warren Buffett or Bernie Madoff made a big difference. Whether it’s government or banking, consumer must beware.
- Traditions will become more important because young people have a very different perspective on traditions.

Graduate Profile
MK: Let’s shift to the graduates. What was the most different from today for the graduate of 2020?
- Content knowledge was diminished and other skills took a more preeminent role
- Graduation takes place at mastery not based on age or class
- Self-accountability as opposed to requirements. The onus for learning is now on the student not on the institution
- Learning expands beyond the walls of the school
- Do you really need to learn at all or do you just need to know how to find it?
Here is something to bump up against: Content is only important in context.
- What about Fun to learn for the sake of learning
If I want to force you to memorize these post it notes, some of you will find it interesting and others won’t. But should we force everyone to learn it?
Other comments?
- People need to learn to think as individuals and not as a common mass.
- Multi-lingual
- Creativity, brainstorming
Was there anything as you were going through this exercise that was an a-ha or insight?
- We got pinched by our assignment and didn’t have leadership emerge.
- I worry about the cost of college in 2020
- Access to technology is still problematic especially for those in poverty
Minneapolis has created a city-wide wifi network so that 100% of its people. See article here
- Probably at a billion dollars putting them in debt.
They aren't alone. That's a good point. Counties are in debt, counties and cities are in trouble. It’s surprising this didn’t come up this morning.
Any other insights?
- Our belief statements were the same at any age. But I don’t know if they were being delivered in the schools.
Any surprises?
- I noticed that many people didn’t like the idea of no classroom
- Larger disconnect
- This conversation is all very positive. I’m less so. I don’t think the picture is as rosy out there. I think there are a lot of problems that will be very difficult to solve. There will be things generated that are totally out of our control. We’ll be faced with the consequences.
- We talked about ethics and those should be brought to the forefront.
That speaks to me about complexity. The ability to deal with that is the core of ethics.
The next activity will include food. Find your name on the screen and go to your area.
