National Alliance for Physician Competence Discovery Workshop

Context

  • The group discussed the next steps and also spent some time discussing a possible name change for the Alliance. They then spent some time looking at avatars in SecondLife - which was a really odd way to end the session ;-)

Do you want to take a shot at the steering committee and who should be on it?

We should include assessment in the name of the organization.

You learned some tools today that would allow you to float some terms out there and see what physicians like and how they feel about them.

When we are concerned about a physician we send them to some kind of assessment tool. They weren't going to assess competence.

What about the National Alliance for Maintaining Competence?

Don't we want them to do what is in the GMP document?

What about the National Alliance for Good Medical Practice? Plus you could have a tag line with that.

If you were to go to a term like good medical practice that is broader then just the physician and includes the kinds of things we were talking about. You need both. The GMP document de-constructs competencies into physician competence. You can measure and improve competencies. You also need a holistic view. Moving to competencies is a way to defuse the politics. The whole is greater than the parts.

It could be something like: National Alliance for Physician Competencies: Promoting Good Medical Practice

The idea is that it is a lifelong learning process with reflection and improvement.

Promoting Good Medical Practice seems to be something that can evolve over time. Competency will always be a lagging indicator.

We heard in our group that we can get dinner in December but we may not get dinner in January. Will that financial part happen without a steering committee? We may need to be more formal now. We don't want to get to December and not know what's happening in January.

We also talked about a memorandum of understanding but we don't have an entity that would sign for the Alliance?

We could have a declaration of good medical practice and everyone can sign it?

FSMB can develop a memorandum. Who is going to take all this forward?

Assuming that things are going to carry on as they have been then Carol will be the person doing all this.

An MOU would create a shift to the Alliance being responsible for that portion of time for the staff and making it more formal. It could be a tool to raise more seed funding as well.

Do we have enough money to get through to December?

The issue is that the organizations that gave money did so with the understanding their money would go to these kinds of efforts (meetings) and not for paying staff. Some substantial amount of money is needed to get us through to paying for staff and support.

A group of individuals should meet before December and hammer out some of these issues and perhaps come up with a slate for voting in December and a number of things that are left out. They could make a recommendation to the group in December.

Is this a viable first cut for who should be on that call? Jim can decide. We have enough trust in him to figure it out.

What about the sponsor groups for the next meeting? Each sponsor group will work with the facilitators to design and solidify the objectives for the December sessions. We've been trying to get different folks represented and participating.

We trust Carol to continue to do that.

Thank you all very much.
